Do you know who will inherit your estate?

I was reading an article in La Presse recently in which it was said that in 2021 in Quebec, the proportion of households living in common-law relationships (de facto spouse) was 43%.

This represents almost one out of two couples who are not married. It is extremely important for de facto spouses to have a discussion about the inheritance in case of death, especially when there is no will...

The article mentions that when two people get married, it is very likely that they will meet with a notary who will make them aware of the importance of making a will.

As for common-law spouses, they must make a will. Why don't they do so? Perhaps to avoid having difficult conversations, or perhaps they themselves mistakenly believe that their spouse will inherit, even if there is no will.

We have a duty to be better informed as citizens about the terrible impact this could have on our lives.

And if we were to add to this by saying that your spouse who dies with children from a previous union, it could be the children of that spouse who inherit and not you.

You still have no will and no life insurance.

Who will your estate go to?
